I heard a rumor that it is bad to shut down your computer all the time (when I go to bed at night). Is it true that it is better to just have your computer in sleep mode and that it is bad to constantly be shutting down your machine?

Also, I have to restart my computer alot lately because it just gives me a blank screen lately when I start it up. I am forced to hold the power button to turn it off, then turn it back on. Does this hurt the computer at all? Should I return it? The other day I had to do this six times until it finally started up.

Not sure about the sleep/shut down...I personally never shut down my computers unless I won't be using them for more than a day or two. My laptops I typically sleep overnight and I've never had any problems.

This doesn't sound right at all. Did you run the hardware test that comes on the cds? I'd also look to see if you have a panic log entries for times coordinating with these "black screens."

I'd try returning it if you're still in your return period, or at the very least going to an Apple Store and having the genius bar look at it.

I can't remember the last time I shut down my computer(s).

But yeah, yours sounds like it has "issues".
