MBP sleep problems - lid

I have an issue that sometimes when I close the lid on my 1.83 MPB, it doesn't go to sleep. I put it into its sleave / skin carrier, put it in my carry bag, and drive home.

When I then take it out of the bag...it is BOILING hot with the fan running full speed. I seriously worry that something plastic will have melted!!!!

Any ideas?

Is this software or hardware?

This happened with my girlfriend's Macbook (not pro) she got in August. I ran all the software updates and it hasn't happened since. Is your MBP updated fully?
