When I put my Macbook Pro to sleep and shut the lid, or just shut the lid, it wakes up after a few moments while the lid is still shut. If I open the lid it goes to sleep. If I close the lid again it'll wake back up. It's almost like it was constructed wrong.

I've turned off all motion sensing software, bluetooth and airport. I thought perhaps it was waking from one of those.

The closest "Genius Bar" is 2 hours away or I'd just take it in. I'm a CS Graduate student and everyone in the grad office is stumped as well. Two other people have MacBook Pro 3,1s and they don't have this problem.

In advance: I realize there are other posts on this subject; however, they don't describe my exact problem wherein my Mac goes to sleep if I open the lid and wakes up if I shut it again.

Thanks again,
Derek

FTR, my MB has had that same issue as well as when open and in sleep, not waking up all the way every time. The Genius who looked at it said it might be a logic board issue (dunno what the final conclusion is as this was just last Thursday and the MB apparently hasn't even left the store :().

Have you tried creating a new user account and seeing if the same thing happens in the new account?

No soap, doc. Still happens with a new account. Also occurs if I log out and put it to sleep from there. Thanks for the thought though.

If I'm logged out then surely it's a hardware issue, right?

If it still happens in the new user account then that means its not a software problem. You could try an archive and install, but I'm pretty sure that it will have the same result as you had when creating the new account. Seems like you'll either have to call Apple and request a box to send it in, take it to the nearest Apple Store, or just live with it.

I have had this same thing happening to my MBP, not only is it annoying to open back up and have to wait, but I am worried about it being awake while I carry it around in a non breathing bag.

I am going to make a call but let me know what happens with yours please.

Will do.

I'm not sure how soon I'll be sending mine in. It has all my thesis research/writing on it and I'll be hard pressed to part with it... even for just a few days.
