This is not really a major problem but it's something I want to ask. Does anyone elses Macbook Pro take about 2-5 seconds to go to sleep once you close the lid? It's a lot longer than I'm used to, as on the iBook closing the lid meant the laptop would sleep immediately. Now I have to wait around to make sure it does, which is a pain if you're in a hurry.

Does this happen to anyone else, or should it be quicker?

maybe this is a stupid Q, but how do you define going to sleep - my fans & drive may whir for a second or two after i close the lid, but thats all. I guess it may depend on how many apps and processes are running at the time.

I find that waking up my MBP is more frustrating - i have it passworded, and sometimes i will open it up and it will take 30 seconds to awake. Occasionally it refuses to wake and i need to shut the lid again, wait a few secs and try again. Mind you, my PB did the same.

I've noticed the same thing. My powerbook would go to sleep immediately when I closed the lid. My Macbook Pro seems to take a few seconds. I'm having other problems with the MBP not going to sleep properly at times.

genius said it's normal, and slapped my hand for "screwing with OS X" when i was gonna open the lid during that 6-second about-to-sleep period.

it's because Macbook & Macbook Pros go into safe sleep mode when you close the lid...data is being written to the harddrive during the few seconds before the light starts pulsing, so opening it or moving it during that time would not be good.
