My MBP is a bit less than one month old now. It's a refurb, but it came it great shape and looked completely new. So far, it has been a great machine. Just one problem with it: When I set it down after putting it to sleep, I hear it restart. It seems to happen whenever I do anything more than set it down with utmost gentleness. I can't really afford to be setting it down like that every time, and it's a bit troubling that it restarts so easily. If I'm working on something, obviously I'll lose my work each time.

Any thoughts on what could be causing it?

does it restart this way when running on AC power? Is your MBP set to automatically restart after a power failure? If the former is false and the latter true, see if you have any loose screws in your battery compartment and check to make sure all the contact points for your battery are straight. I had the same problem on my PB G4 both of the points I just mentioned needed attention. I fixed it my self and have not had anymore problems. Hopefully it is a simple fix for you too.

Yes, this happens with my C2D MBP 17" as well. When I close the lid, and it finishes sleeping, it will awake again very easily -- such as if I pick it up and put it in my laptop bag.

I've never heard or read why this happens, and it has concerned me because I don't like the idea of it waking up in my laptop bag on its own. I know that it has occasionally done this because it will sometimes come out of my laptop bag warmer than it should be.

I thought I saw in a MBP disassembly somewhere that there is a small magnetic sensor in the right side of the display case or lower case that is the lid open/close sensor. I've always assumed that there must be something extra sensitive about that sensor to cause this problem to happen.

If you ever find out what causes the issue, I'd love to know.

As a workaround, when I know I'm going to be moving the MBP around a lot (like during a day of travel), I'll deep-sleep my MBP to be sure it it won't wake up in transit.

Gavin.
