I'm hovering between the MBP and Windows forums here (it seems to be a hardware problem but only happens in Windows)...

When in Vista (using Boot Camp) on my 2.33 GHz C2D MBP, the system intermittently emits a high-pitched squeal. I don't know whether this is the infamous "whine" (I thought that was fixed in the C2D systems) but it's definitely making a noise!

Has anyone else experienced this? It's only happening in Windows, not in OS X.

I'd squeal too if I was touched that often by your lingering fingers. Is the squeal emanating form any particular part of the machine? To check if it's a speaker driver issue, mute the speakers for a while. It'll probably still squeal (I certainly would), but it'll rule the speakers/drivers out at least.

Heh, I've already tried muting the speakers, no luck there!

I assume from the responses that it's not a common problem then

Try unplugging any devices from your audio output port. The high pitched sound comes on for me under windows if I have anything plugged into my audio output.

i know when starting Windows my computer starts hissing faintly, near where the MagSafe plugs in. Its power related i think...and the hissing starts between the Windows boot screen and the Log in screen, when the display is initialized. But its very faint. The sound also changes when I turn on my USB powered laptop cooler, so I'm assuming its power related.

If its like squealing like a pig or easily audible then it could be the fans, because Windows causes the MBP to run hotter than OS X for some reason, idle to idle.

On a more serious note, yes mine does exactly the same thing. I never really noticed it with XP installed but now with Vista on my second partition it's pretty loud!

The noise gets quieter the more load the computer is under, as was the case before the logic board got replaced when it did the same in OS X.

That said, it could just be poor power management drivers in Vista or something like that. Vista doesn't seem to know how to manage power states properly.

I have had that same problem since i bought my computer almost a year ago. Apple has replaced the logic board and both speakers and still no change. I've just learned to deal with it.

Thanks for that, I very rarely boot into Windows so I'm not going to worry about it for now. If it starts happening in OS X then I'll start panicking though :p

Does the squealing change when you adjust the screen brightness?

Mine doesn't squeal at the highest or lowest brightness - but AppleCare still replaced the Logic board which has resolved the problem at all screen brightnesses.

Just an update: Vista is now gone. I'm back on XP, and it's once again nice and quiet.
