I've had my 15" 2.2Ghz Macbook Pro for like 3 weeks now. I immediately noticed that my battery health was 98% out of the box and not 100% as one would expect. However, I disregarded this as something minimal that could probably be resolved through calibration.

I realized lately however that my battery life dropped to 94% with only 8 cycles. This startled me a bit so I decided to calibrate my battery as per the instructions on the Apple Support website (charge up, wait 2 hrs, drain until it sleeps, wait till it dies - no longer sleeping, recharge). The battery life is still being reported as 94%.

I bought my Macbook Pro along with a friend who also bought one too and his battery is still 100% after 20 something cycles. Does it appear that I have a faulty battery? I fully understand that the batteries basically begin to "die" once they're created, but it just seems mine might have an issue and if it does I'd like to identify it early.

i don't have an answer, but i will chirp in that my health is also still @ 100% after a little more than a month and 15 cycles. i don't know if this helps influence your decision, but hopefully it does. i'd call applecare or something, just to get a feeler for the situation. cheers.

hm, the drop to 94% sounds weired - mine started out at 98% but went to hundred after three cycles - iStart currently reports 100% after eight cycles.

I wonder how well "health" is measured anyway, I would probably give it a few more cycles before calling Apple.

hmmmm..... 94% does seem a little low for a new battery. Have you downloaded coconutBattery to check what the capacity of the battery is. You can also log the state of the battery to see if there is any change.

Mine was always 100% until last week when it dropped to 99%. But strange things have been happening to my battery which I've been monitoring using coconutBattery.

At first the current battery capacity was 5600mAh which was above the normal 5500mAh. This was excellent then after about the 3rd calibration I had done it dropped to 5394mAh. Now after a few more charges its working it way back up to the original charge capacity.

I know its sad and that I wouldnt be able to tell the difference if the the capacity droppd a few percent but its starting to be come a bit of an obsesion to me and after every charge I have a look at coconutBattery to see if there is any change.

I was surprised when I got my SR MBP that the battery health was 98%. It was a couple days after it arrived that I downloaded iStat, so I don't know if it was like that out of the box. Oh yeah, I'm on 15 cycles now.

Yes, I've downloaded coconutBattery and I've been logging the battery health for a few days now. The current battery capacity reads 5180mAh. It was 5122mAh before I calibrated (which was a few days ago).

my mbp i purchased a few weeks ago has the same issue. when i opened it the battery would only charge to 98%.. it reached 100% a few times. right now it has fully charged at 95%.

coconutbattery states the current battery capacity is 5546 mah and the original battery capacity is 5500. is it supposed to be higher than the original?

i would have thought current would be lower than original.

current battery charge 5270 mah. max battery charge 5546 mah

I have the same problem, except my health is at 97 instead of 94. I know this is not normal because my macbook with 2x the cycles is at 100%. I have calibrated numerous times, perhaps I will look into a replacement. OP, i suggest you talk to apple about a replacement, 94 is below par.

If the current capacity is greater than the original capacity then you're health is 100%. The batteries won't charge if its already near full charge to prevent overcharging.

Is it possible that you're confusing current capacity with maximum capacity in coconut battery?

You should probably quote who you meant to direct that towards. In my case the current capacity is less than the original capacity. After calibrating (using the method posted on the Apple Support) it's reporting 94% even though my charge cycles are < 10 and I've had my MBP for only 3-4 weeks. That's my problem.

mine started out at 98% or so too

its at 97% with 12 cycles

my pb was over 100% when i first got it so idk..but i figure 97% isn't to bad if it stays there
