Just received my MBP SR. Being using PC all my life and I just switched.

Was trying to use the Office test drive. Clicked on Entourage. Icon blink and program doesn't install.

Brought it in to Apple store (3 hrs wait) and the Genius found another problem (kernel panicking from external hard drive).

The next day, I called Apple care and go thru the steps, but still doesn't solve the problem. They said I need my CD to reinstall but I don't have my CD at that time.

Today, I drove to an authorized apple service center and they said it's definetely hardware issue if kernel panicking from external HD.

I call in Apple care again to have this replaced, but they said it has to be repaired first. I do not want it repaired as I will be charge if it's software issue. I don't feel it's fair to change me for something which I just receive and has software issue with pre-installed software.

And Apple canada do not have mail-in repair.

So basically, I'm stuck. I can either drive down to US to have it replaced, but this is a customized MBP so the store probably won't be able to replace it.

What should I do? Maybe I should have sticked to PC.

If it's brand new, then why don't you have the discs? Also, does the external drive manufacturer support Macs?

Yes, I do have the disc. But it's being shipped to Canada. I was in a business trip and don't wanna be carrying the disc around. So, I ship the box with disc in it to my home. It has been shipped monday so it'll take 2 weeks to reach here.

The external HD is from Mac Genius. He was trying to reinstall the OS, but it doesn't even boot from the external HD and kernel panicked.

Could be something wrong with my firewire? The Mac genius external HD is firewire.

Ahh bugger. It could be the Firewire... As much of a hassle as it is, I'd get it fixed by Apple. It's almost certainly a hardware issue so I really doubt they'll charge you. :)

Do you think it'll be fixed or replaced? I prefer replacement as I am thinking of getting the glossy screen instead.

If I do it in Canada, it will be fixed instead of sending in to Apple for repair. So less likely for me to request glossy screen.

If I go down to US, the chance of me getting it replaced will be higher,....

am I right?
