I am about to get a new SR MBP and I noticed you can choose to have the matte or glossy screen. What have you guys noticed and liked/disliked about your current matte and glossy screens. I have a MB and the glossy screen seems fine but I have no way to compare it to a matte. Let me know what you think so I can figure out what to choose.

Go down to the Apple Store and use both and see which you prefer, there is no way for us to tell you which one you will prefer. I personally very much dislike glossy screens and will only use matte screens because of the reflections in the glossy screens.

Just to warn you, you're about to be attacked by posters annoyed with this post.
Anyway

It depends on what you're doing, if you're doing graphic design and need the exact/correct colours of a project then go for matte.
If you want everything to look more colorful and extravagant then go for glossy.

matte.

most asked question ever. :apple:

-No, sorry this is my first post and I hate when people do this. I am at work right now and do not have time to look through old post. Thanks for any replies sarcastic and serious!

I cannot really go to the apple store and see how much I like the screen because 20 min will not give me a good opinion. And what about how it performs in sunlight?
The glossy is quite hard to see in the sunlight, what about matte?
Is there any other little things like glare that you guys can think of that has a difference between these two?
Thanks in advanced

Another thing to consider is the matte version tends to fair better than the glossy if you're on the go a lot. As well as the other points people have mentioned, more accurate colors closer to final print (when calibrated, obviously). The glossy does provide amazingly deep, saturated colors… if you have the same constant light source.

Is there a way to make one of these glossy vs matte screens a sticky, i know theres a small faq, but just randomly make one of these a sticky.

there was a thread recently with some good photographs of the two kinds. I think those pictures are more valuable than many subjective opinions.

keeping in mind the glossy gathers more fingerprints, you should look at these pictures:

Again, I feel that the photos in the first post of that thread are the best way to get a feel for the screens, assuming you cant go to the store and see them in person. 4JNA has shown how each screen acts at different angles in a few normal lighting conditions.

I came very close to getting a glossy screen, agonizing over the choice, but ultimately got a Matte and am very happy with it. My computer at work was glossy (an old CRT monitor), and the glare bugged the hell out of me. Glossy is pretty, especially for games, but I'm a law student and need to read text on the screen for hours on end without eye strain.

When I notice the mild glow on my screen now that's caused by my lamp, and think of how sharp its glare would be on a glossy screen, I know I made the right decision for me.

I've looked at both on the 17 sr, HD glossy and reg matte, both displays are fabulous, truly make my ibook look bad... but anyway, go take a look at them either one is excellent. Matte has nice color and depth, glossy, albeit it did have a few minor reflections (unnoticed when something is on the screen) appeared to have a deeper richer vibrancy to colors, and the enhanced res of the hd is just awesome, much more clarity the the regular matte definitely worth the upgrade to go hd.

I would have to disagree with the glossy in the sunlight. I have a macbook which only comes in glossy and I really like it. I just took it out in the direct sun on my balcony and I could still read the screen. I don't know if you would want to do it all day but it was still completely readable. The sun almost acted like a backlight for the screen. Obviously at the right angle the sun is reflected in your eyes. Also, with half the screen in the shade and half in the sun it was alright. I can't compare to a matte screen but I have heard that in sun they get washed out. As has been said it is totally up to you but I just wanted to clear up this issue.
