MBP Start up chime plus lid light-up when off

2011 13” MBP started doing this.

Battery not depleted. Its turned off correctly on shut down, I plug in charger while lid closed, the laptop is definitely off, and I hear the start up chime and the Apple LED lights up while lid closed.

Any help most appreciated... Battery does have a Condition: Replace Soon but is that relevant?

The amber light on the magsafe is dimming and going off now when it is charging, does that make anything clearer to anyone about what's happening with this now?
 
Not trying to make this too simple, but you have a power problem.

could be:
power adapter - try another if you have access to a different power adapter. Mainly, you want to see if the magsafe LED is more stable (or is the same dim/off condition)
Magsafe board (where the adapter plugs in). The board is cheap, and pretty easy to replace.
Does the magsafe port appear clean and undamaged, with no loose bits visible? I usually use a plastic probe to (gently) try to move things around. Shouldn't be any movement around those "gold" pins.
Battery, maybe failing, and causing some kind of power surge when the charging adapter is plugged in.
Finally, if the adapter is fine, and you tried replacing the magsafe board, then it's probably the power circuit on the logic board.
For now --- until you decide what you want to do, if you plug in the charger, leave the lid open.
Or, plug in the charger first, THEN shut your power off. Should stay off then (maybe).

Thanks Delta, I've been using the original magsafe that it came with for a while, minor split in the part near the plug-in, but still worked fine for months since split. For safety reasons, I bought a new one but took back to Apple when realising it was inferior quality to the original, got very hot and very thin wire, and thought £80 was mad for a flimsy second best, all be it Apple made, so stuck with old original.

Battery 'replace soon' has been saying that for several months, so not 'replace now' yet, but probably should be and that is what I will do next I think before magsafe board?

I will try new battery first, Spent ages searching and every review for every battery has a moan, because you can't get original battery from Apple. That's why I've avoided it for so long.

When you say leave lid open when plugging in, can it cause damage when it's turning itself on while the lid is closed?

There's not so much ventilation when the lid is closed, and if the Apple on the lid lights up, that means that the display is on, too. It can get pretty hot when the display is on, with the lid closed.
But, try it first like I said: Plug in the power adapter first, then shut off. I think it should stay turned off.
Or, just plug it in while you are using it. If the battery is not in good shape, then there's not much point in charging that up, is there? It's not going to get better as time goes on.

I bought one of these just a couple of weeks ago. Seems to work well. I took some time to look at reviews, and the supplier (not Amazon) actually contacted me before I received the battery, so I would contact them when I recieved the batt. Gave me good vibes, I suppose, but the battery looks and works OK - and my customer is pleased with it. Only time will tell, I suppose, but the price was pretty fair for replacement batteries.

(Just my opinion - I doubt that the battery will fix everything about your power problem. I would more likely suspect the magsafe card. But, ultimately you need a battery, too.

Thanks again, yes that all makes sense,

On UK Amazon they don't have that make, but there are several around that price range and guess you have to be lucky you get a decent one and most are probably the same manufacturer. I will see who supplies the magsafe card and grab one of those too. No soldering involved is there? Connectors on MBP and lead look pretty clean, apart from the frayed wire part. I know many think it's time for a new MBP, but I just can't afford that at the moment, and if I'm honest, I am not mad about the new ones either. Upping the RAM and putting in an SSD has made me want to keep this more, so if I can sort this I'll be very pleased. All the stories of after market batteries and swelling doesn't fill you with confidence, but have to bite the bullet now. Thanks
 
Thanks for all your help. Found reasonably priced battery. Just shy of £40 which is what they call OEM. I’ll wager it probably isn’t at that price but anything will be an improvement. Mine is averaging 60% health. Honestly thought it would’ve been nearer to 20% after 8 years of daily use. I can’t complain about it, but I never got the quoted battery charge they advertised in 2011. Usage now though, an hour YouTube session will deplete battery.
