My mom has a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) that has a broken screen and boot up issues, so I'm trying to diagnose it to see if it is repairable or truly toast.

Upon startup, the system will simply chime, then a few seconds later shut down, and then chime again, in an endless loop. As the screen is completely broken and doesn't display anything, I have managed to dock it to an external display, keyboard, and mouse and use it in clamshell mode as soon as I start it up and close the lid. An Apple logo appears, and I've tried safe mode...but no dice, just reboots. I've tried recovery (Command-R)...no dice, never loads, just reboots. I can get to the boot selector screen by holding down the Option key, and even when plugging in external boot drives that I know work fine with other systems, selecting them only causes the system to restart yet again. I've even tried to hold down D to bring up diagnostics, and it asks me to find a wifi network and enter a password, but even though that brings up Internet Recovery and says that this will take a while, the system will reboot only a few seconds later having accomplished nothing. I've reset PRAM/VRAM and the SMC, but nothing has worked to get it to boot to anything.

I've tried connecting it to my M1 Air with a Thunderbolt cable and restart it in Target Disk mode; that works, sort of...I get my Air to recognize the Pro's drive, but when it prompts with "Enter a password to unlock the disk “Macintosh HD - Data”," it won't recognize any administrative password that I throw at it (that my mom is sure would be the password, and matches the hint as well).

As such, I have no way to access the drive or get the system to boot into any sort of repair or restore setup. Before I throw up my arms and bring it to the Apple Store (it's of course out of warranty, but I was hoping I could at least order my own replacement screen if the system was otherwise operational), I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone had any other strategies I can try to get this thing to recognize any sort of boot partition or disk.

Any ideas?

Are plugging in the external drives after booting or before? If you leave them connected and then reboot into the drive selection screen, clicking on the External drive results in an immediate reboot?

And for diagnostic boot, "cmd + d" is used in some models as opposed to just pressing D on its own. Try that.
Also, since you are using an external keyboard, you have to make sure that your keys are actually being read by the Macbook, if you press them instantly like you do with the built in keyboard, it likely won't work, because it takes a second or two to recognize the usb inputs. So, what I do is reboot and when I hear the chime I press tap a random key 2-3 times very quickly and then press the key combination I need.
It doesn't always work, but it has helped and it doesn't hurt to try.

I have the exact same problem with a MBP end 2019 edition with four USBC ports... None of the known steps work. I've been trying all the stuff that comes up by googling for MBP stuck in boot loop. Resetting, resetting NVRAM, recovery mode, recovery from internet (sometimes results in reboot, sometimes in error - 1008F), old recovery from internet (same behavior) after deactivating activation lock via Apple ID on another system... I've been using the MBP's own keyboard and screen which are still working. However, I can't boot the system anymore. Last thing I tried before it got into the loop was trying to run a dual boot partition into safe mode in order to geta system update working. Never got that far. It's stuck in the loop since I pressed OPTION, selected the partition and hit enter, immediately followed by shift...

I'm completely lost. At OP, hoping that you read this, have you found any solution or even a cause for this problem?

Thank you...

And you can't just hold option while booting now?
It's difficult to actually get rid of that option on a Macbook, if it allowed you to select the partition that seemingly caused the issue then it should still allow you to use it to select a different partition.

That may not be the most useful for you currently, but id need more information to help more specifically.

UPDATE...I was successful in reviving the system using the procedures outlined here:

:)

Took a few tries, but basically managed to restore the device's firmware using Apple Configurator while connected to my M1 Air, and then wipe the SSD and reinstall the OS. Other than the still-broken screen, the system is as good as new now.

Hope this helps others!
