I'm considering buying a refurb 1.83GHz MBP instead of a BlacBook. One thing that troubles me, though, is the processor speed. I'm pretty sure the 1.83GHz MBP would best the 2.0GHz MB, but I'm looking for reassurance. Will a 1.83GHz MBP be faster than a 2.0GHz MB. I'm thinking it will be because of the dedicated graphics.

If it helps, I'll be using the iLife suite, and probably be doing a fair deal of iMovie editing. I won't be using any power applications, I may get Photoshop CS2, but nothing too bad.

I'll probably be buying the MBP, the extra screen room is enough for me, but knowing this would really help.

Thanks.

Processor wise, no. The 2.0gh macbook is faster then the 1.83gh macbook pro. The only difference is screen size and dedicated video card on the macbook pro.

Well, rendering a movie the 2.0Ghz macbook would be a few minutes faster than the 1.83Ghz MBP. However with things that use 3D (e.g. games) you're looking at more of a 10FPS versus 70FPS with the MB vs. MBP.

Okay, it's pretty much like I figured, with the dedicated graphics. But in general, the MBP will run OS X at pretty much the same speed as the 2.0GHz MB?

If you don't play games or use any apps that take advantage of the GPU why don't you just get the MB. Performance wise for general tasks you are probably not going to see a difference, but for processor intensive tasks you might see a small difference.

It sounds like you already made up your mind for the MBP though.

Since you're getting into Movie Editng, I'd go for the MBP, for the more comfortable screen size as well as the expansion slot - which could come in useful for additional storage etc.

Yeah, I've made up my mind, but I just wanted to hear what some sensible people thought.

I like the metallic look better than the MB, and the extra screen room is a nice bonus.
