I have run the hardware test with the install disk, the disk utility with the install disk and come up with no errors.
When I select shutdown the MBP restarts instead of shut down. It will not sleep manually or automatically. If I select sleep from the Apple menu, it will start to go to sleep then wake right back up and ask for my user name and password. Same thing when I close the lid. The only way I can get it too sleep is by setting the Energy Settings to 1 minute. I have called Apple tech support and they told me to do an archive reinstall but that didnt fix anything. Any ideas?

You did an Archive and Install and it didn't fix anything?

Sounds like something is dodgy hardware wise - take it to your local Apple Store / Authorized vender.

You tried resetting the SMC ?

Have you tried shutting it down via a terminal command?

Open a Terminal session

Type in the following (minus the quotes)

"sudo shutdown -h now"

Then press return, you will be prompted for your password, enter that then press return. Your computer should now go into shutdown, information on the shutdown process will display on the terminal until the terminal app itself is killed by the shutdown sequence.

If that doesn't work I'm inclined to agree with the previous poster about a hardware problem. Take it in to Apple for an inspection.

ok I spent half the day on the phone with apple 'tech support' and they finally told me that the only option I had was to do a clean install, so I did and guess what. Its still doing the same friggin thing. Wont sleep and wont shut down. Im taking it into the apple store tomorrow. Im quite pissed to say the least.

Oh I did try the terminal command as well and got the same results.

I now have an appointment with a 'Genius' tomorrow afternoon.
Does anyone know what the likelyhood of them giving me a new notebook is? The one I have now is about 8 months old.

It'll get repaired. It's only if they "fix" the problem and it happens again twice they'll consider a free replacement.

It could be something really straight forward to fix, might not be. You'll find out when you take it in.

Apple Support SUCKS so far.

OK I went to the Apple store and they told me that it was a logic board (the phone specialists kept telling me they were sure that it was a software issue) and that I would be without my computer for a week. The 'Genius' told me it would get shipped out first thing in the morning. I received a call today at 5pm from the Apple store asking if any data needed to be backed up on my MBP. This was after I told the guy yesterday that I had just done a format and reinstall of the OS and didnt need anything backed up. Needless to say, they had not shipped it off yet so I probably wont get it back til next week. All this took place after talking to 3 different level 2 'specialists' through the phone tech support. Each one gave me their email and extension and told me to call and/or email them as soon as I got done with an archive install or lastly the format and install. I still have not heard back from any of them after leaving several messages (though one of the specialists vm box was full so I couldnt) as well as several emails. I am less than pleased with the support I have received so far to say the least. has anyone had similar issues or know how to file a complaint? I love my MBP but so far their service is horrible!
