MBP upcoming M2 or Mac Studio with M1 now?

Besides the idea of having a laptop vs. desktop....in terms of computing power which one would be better?
Mostly dealing with Photography and video editing beside the general use of a computer...(internet, emails, movies , music etc.)

Which one would you go for?

Mac Studio full spec MAX (NOT the Ultra)

  • Apple M1 Max with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
  • 64GB unified memory
  • 2TB SSD storage
OR

MBP 16' potentially M2 Max full spec:
  • Apple M2 Max chip with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine
  • 64GB unified memory
  • 2TB SSD storage

Any ideas? comments?

You've listed literally the same specs so there isn't much else to debate besides if you want a desktop vs laptop...

depends on how long you want to wait.
one is available now, the other at some future time.

either way, i'd invest in a much larger monitor than the 16" MBP.
editing photos and video on the small screen always feels very cramped to me.

Spec wise you are talking about, what, like a 20% or so power difference between the M1 and M2? Things we don't know though, include thermal limits of the M2 Max in the MBP....and release date...

To me the bigger difference is going to be portable vs desktop. There is a pretty good price difference there as well. The 20% power difference seems less of a big deal in comparison. That is to me anyway.

If there's any reason you'd want more than 64 GB RAM for your video editing, the full-spec M2 Max should be 96 GB (based on the M2 coming with up to 12 GB rather than 8 GB RAM modules).

Or if you don't mind waiting until 2023 there's the M3 Studio...;)

It's mainly a question of portability. For the base spec models it's neck and neck but once you start adding more RAM to the Macbook Pro it quickly gets more expensive than the Mac Studio.

I tried the Mac Studio in a store the other day and was surprised how big it was in person. It's probably about half the size of my small form factor desktop PC (Ryzen 3700X + Noctua U12A cooler + 2080 Ti) in a Cooler Master NR200P case. I somehow thought the Mac Studio would be smaller.
