Not sure if this is posted in the right location but my mid 2015 15" MBP will not get past the loading screen. It freezes after it asks me for my pw where the screen is black with the white apple logo and progress bar. It worked before I tried to update it last night. There were no interruptions during the update and it was plugged in the whole time.

I went through the whole "first aid" process and tried to restore it but that didn't do anything. I bought it second hand with a new screen and new battery and used it for about a year. I planned on replacing the nvme/ssd anyway but I'm not sure what to do next. Anybody have any more knowledge or advice on what I can do next?

You may want to try booting up in Safe Mode (holding down the Shift key) and, of course, doing a PRAM reset (P-R-Option-Command, letting it chime about 3 times). If you can get it into Recovery Mode (start up with Cmd-R held down) you can try to reinstall the OS in place and see if that clears it up.

Just some thoughts.

"It worked before I tried to update it last night. There were no interruptions during the update and it was plugged in the whole time"

What kind of update are we talking about?
OS update?
Application update?
Again, what KIND of update?

First, try booting in safe mode as rgetter suggests.
(Hold down the shift key continuously after powering on).
Does this change anything?

Also, you might try booting to INTERNET recovery:
Command-OPTION-R
at boot.
(you'll need your wifi password, then you'll see "the spinning globe")
Can you get booted to the internet utilities this way?

The fact that the computer boots normally -- UNTIL AFTER you've entered your login password -- suggests to me that it might be something wrong in your user account that is "jamming things up".
