Sigh.
I bought my MBP at a Comp USA Closeout back in the very end of April, because it was just too good a deal to pass up: the upper end 15.4" model for $2100 + tax, still better than the edu discount ($2300 + tax).
Anyway, I inspected the machine heavily before I bought it because they told me they didn't have any more in the storeroom. And the price was unlikely to drop further (2 days before final closing) and it was fine, even the battery had only 2 cycles. It's worked like a charm, until recently.
It doesn't always start up. And I went to three different Apple stores last Friday about the issue. The first one had no slots at the genius bar (I miss the good old days when one didn't have to wait), at the second, I couldn't reproduce the problem, which of course promptly appeared as soon as I got home. And then I left it at a 3rd Genius bar to have the logic board replaced.
I picked up my MBP yesterday and it seemed fine until tonight. At my mother's house, I fell asleep at some point mid afternoon and after dinner and dishes, I tried waking it up and it wouldn't wake up. And holding the power button (for 5+ seconds) wouldn't turn it off either. I unplugged the AC adapter and everything. The last thing I wanted to do was pull the battery.
So I threw it in my bag (incase sleeve) and took it home and when I pulled the machine out, it was loud and HOT, like burning my fingers hot. I turned on the AC and cooled it a few seconds. The little light on the latch told me it was technically still on. I then tried waking it again to no avail and this time holding the power button worked. I pulled out the battery, new, just calibrated as of this morning actually and it was realy hot. I threw it on my bed and popped in a cold one and lo and behold, it starts.
And the fans start screaming at 5500 rpm. 10 minutes later, they're down back to about 2100 now (my normal is 1900-2000rpm).
So I've made yet another appointment at a genius bar, at yet another Apple Store (earliest appointment I could get was at a different one).
So what should I do? I'm moving to Germany in literally 15 days. Originally, when I couldn't reproduce the problem at the 2nd store, they said they could send it in for diagnostic testing, which would take 7-10 days. I think I may do that tomorrow. Just because I don't want to deal with this when abroad.
Never mind the fact that I'm not screwed for work (web designer/developer).
What would you do? Do you think I can ask for a replacement unit?
Also, the computer is covered under Apple Care (thank you Comp USA).
