I have reviewed several threads on the forum regarding similar issues but haven’t had any luck with the solutions posted.

I have a circa 2015 MBP (no removable battery, no touch bar). Last night the MBP crashed, screen still on but frozen, and the only thing I could do was hold down the power button to turn it off. Since then it hasn’t turned back on. I have tried a SMC reset and resetting the NVRAM (not sure if this worked because the screen isn’t coming on).

Any suggestions?

Please note the following:

  1. Crashed while opening a program.
  2. Held power button to turn off and hasn’t turned on since.
  3. Still charges (charge light shows orange then green when fully charged and I can feel the normal amount of heat when connected to power)
  4. No keyboard backlight. I’ve tried increasing screen and keyboard backlights.
  5. After pressing the power button I can feel the trackpad “clicking” which it only does when powered up. Still nothing on screen (I checked brightness as stated above).
I have tried the following:
  1. Long press power button to turn off.
  2. Single press to turn on doesn’t work.
  3. SMC reset - light went green then back to orange as expected but still wont power up.
  4. NVRAM reset - unsure if this actually worked as I can’t see the screen. I did this after long press of power button and check of trackpad to make sure the MBP was off.

It’s probably time for an upgrade anyway but I’m hoping this isn’t the end for my MBP! Thanks to all in advance for the help.

What happens if you try "internet recovery"?
Command-OPTION-R
at boot ???

IF...
- you can boot to internet recovery, but can't see the hard drive, then I'd suspect a drive failure.
- you can't boot to internet recovery (no response)... looks like a motherboard problem (the drive might be "recoverable")

Nothing happens. I don’t hear the fan Kick in or any other sounds when I press the power button. The only change I notice when pressing the power button is with the trackpad.

I plan to open up the laptop and try disconnecting the battery and motherboard to see if that does anything.

This happened to me before. Logic board died. Apple care had to replace the entire bottom half. Lost everything. 2016 mbp

If you disconnect the battery, leave it that way for 5-10 minutes (do something else for a few minutes...)
While you have it open, check the battery for noticeable swelling.
It won't hurt anything if - while the battery is not connected - plug in the power adapter, then try the power button. Possibly it will power up without the battery connected, and you can watch the fan to see if that spins up. Shut it off (or press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds ) before continuing on to connect the battery. Don't try the power yet. Connect to your power adapter, then wait a couple of minutes, then try the power button.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I opened it up and no luck. Disconnected the battery, waited a while then tried connecting the power adaptor but still nothing. I saw someone elsewhere recommend trying to disconnect the logic board but I couldn’t figure out how exactly that was done. I reconnected the battery and tried waiting, before connecting the power cord but still nothing.

You can trick the MBP to turn on by pressing SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION + POWER for 10 seconds, then do the same thing without the power cord connected. Find something soft and rubbery (or fold a napkin) to put on-top of the power button, so that when you close the laptop, will apply just enough pressure to press the power button without cracking the screen.

Shut the laptop so that while its closed its pressing the power button then connect the power cord.

Try it a couple times before you dismiss it as bs.

You will hear the fans spin up then you can open the laptop and try rebooting to recovery to reinstall OSX as the computer may get stuck on APPLE progress bar screen.

Turing on the computer with the laptop closed works for other troubleshooting issues also.

Hope it helps someone.
