MDRP update

I saw MDRP released an update and I downloaded it. I didn't get the free update but got a discount because I purchased fairly recently. Any way, one of the new features states "Built-in database enabling faster ripping of popular DVDs".

Does anyone have any idea what the means or how it could possibly work? The software already knows what DVD you're ripping, it does a lookup. How does this new "database" enable faster ripping?

Taking a shot in the dark, and saying that the database will let the program know what type of anti-rip shennanigans are on the disk. Maybe stuff like which track of a whole bunch of false tracks, etc.... Ever run into a disc you have to load up Apple DVD player and try to find what the real track is, before you try to handbrake it?

Just speculating though, i got the upgrade email a few days ago but haven't dropped the $7 to upgrade yet, since i have an AnyDVD license on my PC rig.

That sounds like a pretty good guess. One thing I just realized (I actually usually use RipIt more because it does better with scratched disks) is that MDRP doesn't use growl notifications. I recently got Prowl and as I'm going through a big project to rip my entire library, I use it to send an alert to my iPhone when each disk gets done ripping so I can go back into the den and pop in a new one. Can't do that with MDRP. I wonder if I contacted the developer how hard it would be to add.

I think this is correct, but I didn't buy the upgrade cuz I'm a cheap SOB.

Using the built in player in MDRP to find the right track doesn't take too long anyway.

Problems I see:
1. I wonder if this "database" depends on us MDRP users to populate which track is the correct one. (i.e. this feature may not work well until enough users have sent in info.)
2. If the database gets it wrong, I just wasted a lot more time ripping the wrong track, instead of verifying myself.

On the other hand, I love MDRP, and I should buy the upgrade just to keep supporting the developer.
