this document showed up on my root folder:
mds-crash-state

it's 4 kb. it's a document. i can't open it.
open with: none
ownership & permissions: you have: no access
details: owner: system

what does this mean and what should i do with it?

With a quick google search, I came up with this from another forum.

The process 'mds' is one of those that handles the indexing of your drive that is used by SpotLight. So this file is likely just a report from 'mds' about what it was doing at the time of the crash. It isn't anything worrisome. I think you can delete it if you like - you probably will need to do this from the Terminal with a command like 'sudo rm /mds-crash-state'
But before doing this, try restarting your Mac to see if it gets cleaned up automatically - but I think you have already done a restart.

See if that does the trick.

i deleted it. i just wondered if it was something important. i dislike the word "crash", and the fact i couldn't view what was in it.

i think we're back in kansas again toto.
