1) No, you don't have to have a me.com email address for email on your iOS device. However, iCloud mail works around me.com email addresses only, if that's what you're asking.

2) If you want to make one, just turn on iCloud mail on your device in "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" in Settings and it will ask you what you want your @me.com username to be. Good luck!

I want to make full use of iCloud and it's features - i have a google email address must have never shared calendars before, i want to with my wee this time around. Can I use my @sky.com or gmail.com or shall i make a @me.com? sorry for not quite grasping the concept:eek:

do you need to have the me address saved in the contact for imessage to work out its an ios to ios message? Or do they just need to have a me address set up on their phone?

Neither you nor they need @me.com for iMessages, you can set up any email address to receive iMessages.

Ah brill.

And blue is an iOS to ios message (free) and green is a text message yeah?

Then why does iCloud setup only allow the me.com option? I can't change this to say hotmail.com. Me.com is greyed out and all i can change is the prefix (username).
