Me = 'Surprise' upgrade on Mini!

Mac Mini
1.42GHz
512MB
80GB 4200RPM HD
with 32MB VRAM

and I just received my Mac Mini 2 days ago. Turns out what I actually GOT was a

Mac Mini
1.5GHz
512MB RAM
80GB 5400 HD
with 64MB VRAM.

I LOVE surprise upgrades, and after spending, oh, an hour with OS X, I don't think I'll ever go back to Windoz.

I've been switching alot of people to Mini's and the last 2 that I did had this upgrade as well ( although I didn't check the VRAM so that's cool )....it was reported awhile ago that Apple was doing this but as to why don't even mention it is well....waaay beyond me.

Beats me.....what gets me, though, is that people paid money for what the ad says, and they're getting mad that THEY'RE not getting the upgrade, when they technically weren't paying for one.

Because they're getting the 'upgraded' parts at the same cost as the older parts from their suppliers, but still have a stock of the older parts. So rather than create a new 'upgraded' spec model, and sell the lower-spec ones cheaper, they just say that you will get 'at least' what the lower spec one is.

I just find it odd that they are actually setting the processors at 1.5 GHz. They can't really hide hard drive speed or video RAM, but they can underclock the processor. And that's the first thing anyone would notice, anyway.

Maybe it is just to sell a few extra minis to people who want to gamble to get a faster one.

I have heard it is to do with part shortages. Apple hasn't got enough 1.42ghz macmini logic boards, so they are having to use some 1.5ghz logic boards, but they don't have enough of either to fill all the sales of macminis

The logic boards are the same with the exception of resistor fittings (which could be done as a rework). It is the processor (actually, the markings on the processor) which is different.

WOW! lucky bastard.. jk, I wish that had happened to me. The VRAM upgrade seems the best, since you can't upgrade that.

those are the same specs as my powerbook. so i am paying an extra $1300 for portablility and a screen. wow, thats sad.

congrats on the upgraded mini. the same specs as my powrebook that cost just under 3x as much. lucky.

welcome to mac. you'll love it (until you try to play windows only games if thats what you do).

This has been going on for a while. There's a way to check the serial number on Apple's support page so you can see if it's the old kind or new kind without opening the box. I bought my Mini back in October and this had been going on maybe a month by then. I asked the guy at the Apple Store (Buffalo) if I could try a few serial numbers and he said that they'd only been getting the new kind for several weeks. I have seen the old model at Comp USA and places like that where I imagine they don't move through the inventory so quickly-I'm just surprised they've left it unofficial for this long, going on six months now.

PS-If I remember correctly (I figured all this out when I bought my Mini) the 1.25 GHz model also got a bump to 1.3 but it still has 32 MB of VRAM.

I actually waited ages for this upgrade to come official but since it isn't official even now, I ended up ordering a 20" Intel iMac so I can stop waiting for Mac mini upgrades... Nice to know though if I need to get a server or so one day.
