Hello,

So I just added a few TBs of storage to my Mac, and I was wondering what the optimal configuration would be for a media server?

I have 2 ATVs (one 2 and one 3), PS3 and GTV.

What software would work best to organize my media centrally? Is it really just iTunes?

Ideally I'd like to do a lot of blu ray rips and streaming and store everything centrally instead of dealing with media.

Thanks for any help.

I have a Mac Mini Server as a media server. Everything is added to iTunes ( even BD rips with metadata added by Subler ) for serving 2xATV's; I use Plex to serve all the media to iPad and a PS3....

Look at plex

PS3 can access plex's built in DLNA server.
gTV has a native app
aTV2, you can get a plex app if you jailbreak (or airplay from an iOS device if you don't want to jailbreak it)
aTV3, you're limited to using airplay from an iOS device. (Hopefully one of your other options is also hooked to the same TV)

if needed, plex will transcode files on the fly to a format compatible with the player you're using, so you may need a decent server depending on what format your files are in.
it can also re-mux, so, for example, if your files are in the correct format (h.264) but wrong container (.mkv) they will work, and won't need as much processor as a full re-encode.
if the files are in the correct format, plex just passes them off with out much of a processor hit.

In order to the best out of it, you'll need your computer running. I would recommend converting everything to iTunes friendly format, then run PS3 Media Server (that you point to the iTunes library files, of course ;)) alongside iTunes. You'll have all your content available on all your devices, no need to go over there to watch that movie, and to that room for that movie and so on :)
