So a decade or so I built up a sizeable MP3 collection made up of 400-ish albums and thousands of singles (primarily dance music, remixes etc). My iTunes library has around 25,000 tracks in total. When Spotify came out though I stopped adding to that collection as much and just streamed instead. It was easier than downloading and cataloging music myself; just click, click, and I'm listening.

When Apple said they were moving to a streaming service I was quite excited. I hadn't paid for Spotify as the free service was adequate for me. But thought of having not only access to Apple's huge library, but my own music too was too good not to try. Obviously I tried AM for the three free months, and it was a total let down. I cancelled before the first paid month was due.

My issues were that it was:
1. Incredibly slow. Would take ages to perform searches. Selecting an album would take an age to load. Just generally slow.

2. The iOS music app is just awful. There are absolutely no ways in which to sort playlists (i.e. by artist, track name, date added to playlist)

3. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of user created playlists like there is on Spotify. In Spotify you can search for example, "best tracks 2000" and there will be playlists created by normal users with reams and teams of music.

Anyway. Couple of days ago I renewed my AM subscription hoping the bugs would have been ironed out and the little missing features added. Nothing has changed!

Am I missing something? The obvious answer at the moment is to sack off AM and just subscribe to Spotify, but I hate the idea of giving up on an Apple product. I like everything to tie in with everything else. Spotify seems to do everything I want of it with the exception of having all my personal music, though I would imagine most of it is available on there. I would also have to move all my playlists over to Spotify as well which would take weeks!

Thoughts welcome. Cheers.

I prefer many of Apple’s OEM products and services but Apple Music is not one of them. I gave AM a full 30 days of testing before I gave up on it.

Spotify Premium is just so much better. Better everything via Spotify.

Been using Apple Music but decided to give Spotify a try due to their Family plan promotion they've got going on right now. Initial impressions are decent. Not a huge fan of navigating through the app, but like the content and presentation better than AM. Going to roll with this for a bit and see how it goes. I use iTunes Match and jury's still out if I prefer using one app for everything, or if separate apps is the better experience for me.

To me, it seems you already have your mind made up in going with Spotify. I have used both services, although I have used Spotify more extensively since I had a premium subscription to it for 2+ years. I recently made the switch over to AM. While it isn't without it's bugs, I have enjoyed the AM experience; particularly the Siri integration, where I just have to say, "Play Tame Impala's latest album" when I'm driving, and she does just that.

I don't have a large MP3 music collection like the OP, so I'm not tied down to a particular service. I do like how AM is built in to my iPhone and ATV4. I'm also probably one of the weird one's that actually prefers the UI of AM to Spotify. I'm not a huge fan of the black and green of the Spotify UI. I guess I'm more a fan of lighter colors, especially with iOS.

The content on both AM and Spotify are very similiar, so it's really up to you which service you ultimately decide to go with. AM was just released in June, so it's going to take some time to figure all the kinks and bugs out. Spotify has been in the streaming game much longer than Apple. If you want to invest your time and energy making your playlists on Spotify, then by all means go for it. But I think in the long run, AM will become better than what it currently is.

Since none of the devices I own has Siri, Spotify has been a very easy choice. AM's only advantage is Siri integration.

I don't really think AM is getting its bugs sorted out. There's been another thread called something like "Apple Music, it's like they stopped trying" and that's how it feels. I started another free trial to see if anything changed since October. No. It hasn't. Well, there's more Taylor Swift and Beatles on it, but that's the only change I can notice. The library scrambler is still in effect, I checked with a one-song library and AM doesn't check anything but song title – and even that only more or less. "Rebel Heart (demo)" and "Rebel Heart" are one song for AM.

Coincidentally if you'd like some Spotify playlists I've been making my best ofs since 1991 available...

shoud of held out long than the free trial... Those were my same intentions... Was going to give AM a go with and it was terrible, but since then Apple's improved allot of stuff.... I went back and rebuilt my albums.... ... I havan't tried streaming on iOS, but when i use Apple music on desktop, it was great...

Another thing is i have a good collection on Apple music, i didn't wanna start all over with Spotify...

Any song i want, i get.....

Just because u must be always legal means u will constantly be switching/moving services always because one service will not provide everything u are looking for and other may offer some more stuff.. I don't play that game.

If majority of the stuff is there i want, then that's all that counts. The songs i'm after i'm grab whichever way.. legal, or not.....

Speaking strictly about content, do the two services differ that much?

For me, i don't really go for weather presentation wise... I don't care how it looks, as its the content i'm after.. I don't care much about the way it looks since u can easily search... But if the content is there, so am I...

That's all there is too it.

Spotify has some good dance stuff but lacks in this area particularly mixes/remixes

For me Alex K - Promise Land, Skitzmix 35 and Avicii Remixes didn't always exists in Spotify.

Some albums on spotify don't appear on Apple music, and visa vera, so depends which ones in particular.

Spotify doesn't let you add your own music. This is the bottom line deal breaker for me. Aside from that though, Apple's catalog is better. Google Music actually has the best catalog in my experience, but there are other aspects of the service that I don't like.

Apple Music is far from perfect, but it's great.

I'm brand new to Spotify, but on my Mac I was able to move Local files into Spotify and play them on my iPhone.

And how is Apple's catalog better? Genuine question. I keep hearing that the catalogs are basically the same.

Spotify doesn't let you add your own music.
On desktop, go to Settings, Local Files, enable whatever you feel like.
On mobile, create a playlist called, say, "my own music" or something and drag your local files to it. Spotify will sync that with your mobile device. Similarly with playlists which mix your local files with Spotify ones. (I never tried this yet but I've read that's how people do it.)

I gave AM a good try this summer but I wasn't impressed and I feared it messing up my iTunes library like iTunes Match did - and for some users, AM did mess up their libraries.

After that trial period, I turned to Spotifys free service for a couple of months and after enjoying it, I subscribed to the premium service and haven't looked back. In fact, I've not even looked at my iTunes library (for music) since then.

I like the UI of Spotify and the design and color scheme a lot better than AM. I also like their curated playlists a lot and have discovered new music and artists that I've grown to like that way. Plus, those playlists change daily and based on the time of day too, like their mood playlists. That helps keep the service from becoming static and boring, allowing me to find something new to listen to any time I like.

Being able to add tracks from my iTunes library is nice too and I can make tracks and playlists available for offline use as well should I have to be without an Internet connection for some reason.

You'll have to search stuff that you like on both and see what's missing. For me, a lot of stuff I like is missing from Spotify but is on Apple Music. Mostly older punk stuff like the Dead Kennedys, and BYO records stuff like 7 Seconds and Youth Brigade. Google Music has the most complete catalog I've found and includes a lot of rare or out of print stuff, like Laika & the Cosmonauts "Absurdistan" and The Tories "Wonderful Life". Neither Apple or Spotify have those.

It all depends on what you like. You may or not find gaps in the catalogs.

Will it be added to the streaming catalog though? My understanding is any of your own files had to exist locally on the device they are playing on.
