I was mildly impressed with Animoji last year. But it was also glitchy and limited. I got bored of it pretty quick. So did my 10 year old.

The upgraded Animoji and Memoji in iOS 12 is massively improved. I’m actually pretty shocked how much better it works, and I’m running it on last year’s phone.

It hardly glitches at all. Locks on super quick. Animation is very smooth, I’m guessing 60 fps. It’s reading a whole lot more facial elements, including eyes, eyelids, and tongue. The Memoji part is very customizable. And on top of that, they have a live video overlay mode that perfectly lines up the image with your body and even adjusts the lighting to match, all on the fly at high frame rates. My daughter has seen a lot of high tech stuff over the years but she was amazed by this.

Now it may be just a very high tech gimmick at this point, but look at where this is heading. They made this leap in performance with last year’s neural engine and much better software. The Xs has made a big jump in AI horsepower, and I can only imagine what Apple’s chip design group is working on next.

This all goes to show that Apple is extremely serious about AR and computer vision. I’m really excited about what they may have in five or 10 years. They are laying a massive foundation here.

I wish all the built in iSight cameras in their macbooks and iMacs would be updated to support these features as well. I don't see why not. They have a lot of room to work with in a computer vs a phone.

i like the poo animoji haven't tried it since sending that to my work colleagues and manager. Perhaps i should send them one with my tongue sticking out.
