You don't need a memory cleaner. macOS is based on BSD, and BSD will utilize as much ram as it can get hold of whether it actually needs it or not. In the BSD community there is a saying "unused RAM is wasted RAM". If you clear caches they will just fill up again because that is what they do.. they work so that things run more smoothly.. emptying them causes more work for the system. I would advise against any type of "cleaner" for macOS.

As for the unarchiver, that would depend on whether or not you need to work with certain type of archives, so that decision would be based on your particular use case.

You're on a Mac now, it's very different from Windows.. and macOS doesn't require as much user intervention as Windows did.

The Unarchiver is my go-to for expanding pretty much any archive file at work and home. It supports around 60 different archive types. It can't create archives, so you need another app, or just learn to use the command line to make zip or gzip archives.

Sixty different types, huh? Wow, that does sound like a necessary utility.. and it's free.

You don't need a memory "cleaner".
For archives I use Forklift, which is also a Finder replacement, but the Unarchiver is good software.

TheUnarchiver is a good app and generally a recommended installation. That said, for zip archives and gzip-compressed tar archives, macOS has a utility preinstalled (Archive Utility), which can create zip archives too.

That Memory Cleaner app is such rubbish. On inspection of its components, it seems that the core functionality is provided by this bundled shell script:

The app conveniently bundles three other of their apps for you and wastes 50 MB for this.

Windows doesn't require any kind of intervention either. Its MMU is modern and BSD-like, and if left unharmed and unoptimized it will run forever and ever. It's the constant tuning, optimizing, memory cleaning, registry cleaning, etc. that kills it, not being left along

Thank you. I guess I should change my stance on Windows, I haven't used it since 2001. It appears that old habits are best removed when speaking about modern operating systems.

You can laugh at desktop Linux though.

In the consumer space of computing I would absolutely agree, Linux is a laughing stock.

The industrial and high performance realm of computing is a totally different world, though. I have clients with hundreds of thin or fat clients running business-critical in-house developed custom software, be it statistical analysis, an ERP suite that has been around longer than Microsoft and SAP combined, or other important applications on top of CentOS or RHEL. In the industrial space Linux desktops are more common than you'd think but most people never see them because like I said it's a whole different world.

Windows 10 is a real operating system. An operating system is a big complicated program than lets other big complicated programs co-exist peacefully on the same system.

Windows NT 4.0 SP2 more or less did this. NT 3 did not. Windows 98 SE did this, Windows ME did not.

Don't slag on modern versions of Windows unless you have actually tried them. And Microsoft does all of this while most preserving legacy application support. Catalina killed off 32-bit support. OpenGL on Macs is dead.

I'm not making this stuff up: I have two Macs in the house and one cheapass Wintel PC (running Windows 10 Home). I occasionally run Windows 10 Pro in a VirtualBox instance on my Mac mini (mostly for Quicken and Excel).

All of my work computers in the past twenty years have been Wintel boxes. My last employer's IT department refused to deploy Windows 8; they went from version 7 to 10. Even Windows pundits can recognize crap.

You can laugh at desktop Linux though.

You can also laugh at Windows on handheld devices (specifically smartphones).

Arguing about which operating system is better is not the point of this thread, please stay on topic.
