Memory for the new iMac

If I would buy the 24" 2.4 iMac, it comes with a 1gb ram chip. Now i'm no memory expert, but can I buy a 2gb ram chip for the 2nd slot in the iMac (for a total of 3gb). Or do both ram chips need to be the same?
