I upgraded from 12 (arranged as 4,1,1,0 4,1,1,0) to 26 GB RAM. I placed my working 1 GB chips in slots 4 and 8.

SLOT
1 4 GB
2 4 GB
3 4 GB
4 1 GB
5 4 GB
6 4 GB
7 4 GB
8 1 GB

I received this information when I rebooted:

SLOT
1 4 GB
2 -
3 4 GB
4 1 GB
5 4 GB
6 4 GB
7 4 GB
8 -

So I switched chips between 2 and 3

Now I get this:

1 4 GB
2 4 GB
3 -
4 -
5 4 GB
6 4 GB
7 4 GB
8 -

This tells me that the chip in 3 is good.

So I take out 4 and 8

Now I get this:

1 4 GB
2 4 GB
3 -
4 -
5 4 GB
6 4 GB
7 4 GB
8 -

Suggestions? This reminds me of logic problems back in college.

if i remember correctly, the instructions in the booklet recommend filling the slots in pairs of equal size, but starting from the middle, so 4+5, 3+6, 2+7, 1+8 ; all in descending order of GB.

anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

Close. The system suggested
1 - 4
2 - 4
3 - 1
4 - 4

5 - 4
6 - 4
7 - 4
8 - 1

All is well!
