The first time I use my 80 GB Macbook Air I found only 55 GB available! I suppose that the system would need a maximum of 5 GB. Where did the rest of the memory go?

Thats hard drive space. The 80GB hard drive is NOT actual 80GB, it is 74.5GB give or take a few MB. The installed programs does take a bit of space. 5.9GB for the OSX alone and then when you include stuff like iDVD, iMovie and such, it does use up quite a bit of space.

Maybe u would like to do a fresh install and remove not needed items like languages, garage band etc....

That could save u fairly huge amount of useable space...
