memory problem with i-tunes

recently i decided to download i-tunes onto a new computer as the one it was previously on is getting very old! i successfully managed to transfer songs from the library on the old computer into my newly created library. HOWEVER i have noticed that there is a diference in the memory that the songs take up. when synched with my previous library i had approx 1GB memory left and approx 1500 songs. i then synched it with the new library and so far have 1000 songs on my ipod but only 898MB of memory left. to me this makes no sense... anbody any suggestions as to why this might be? thanks
