The new Imacs will be in stores tomorrow and i want to order my memory today with 1 day shipping tio get it tomorow with my mac.

Can I add these 8 gb G.skill memory to the 4gb already in the imac or is it better not to mix n match memory and order 16gb right away?

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231295&Tpk=N82E16820231295

I'm going with the I7 3.4
Base 4gb memory
1tb HD
Ati 6970 2GB memory

First mac ever....

Mixing brands is fine as long as the specs are similar. That G.Skill will work and going with 12GB is a good option too.

And I'll be using this machine for logic 9 a lot.
A bit of world of warcraft and maybe diablo 3 later this year...
Any benefits from the I7 over the i5?

thanks I'll go for it! :p
Any realease date and price on thunderbolt hard drives?
For music production and logic this will be great!!

the timing on the memory won't change anything?
7-7-7-20
CL9-9-9-24
and ddr3-1066 or ddr3-1033?

thanks

Can someone confirm that the entry level imac has 4 ram slots? If it does, why does Apple not allow you to configure it with four pieces of Ram?

Memory

4GB (two 2GB) of 1333MHz DDR3 memory

Configurable to 16GB, only at the Apple Online Store.

http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html

All iMacs have four slots but Apple simply does not offer 16GB in the low-end. I guess there isn't really market for that.

This is kind of a dumb question but what are the chances the ram will be soldered to the board? In the apple online store it says ram can only be upgraded in the online store, I haven't checked if it says that on everything now days.

And for logic 9 is 12 gb memory enough? Or should I get 16gb?

12GB should be fine. You can always add more later on if needed.

Apple just advertises their own store. It is still four slots like before, why would it say 2x2GB otherwise?

RAM is not soldered onto the board, they just want you to upgrade through them instead of OWC/Crucial/Newegg, etc.

New iMac Memory Upgrade

I will order new i7 with only 4gb so that I can also upgrade to 12gb with 8gb kit. Any preference for Crucial, OWC, G.Skill?
On crucial site I see 2 different part numbers for what appears to be same specs. CT2KIT51264BC1339 and CT2109108. Any insight on difference? OWC has part #1333DDR3S08S and is the only one showing as compatible with i7 quad. Thoughts?

How can you get 12GB with only 4 slots and the memory come in 2GB and 4GB

4 GB 2x2
8 GB 4x2
16 GB 4x4

if you get the base 4GB take out one of the 2x2 and but in a 4 then that give you:

base: 2x2+buy: 8GB kit 4x2+=12GB?

It has 4 slots. Stock comes with 2x 2gb sticks. You add in 2 more 4gb sticks. Now you're at 12gb.

It has 4 slots and standard will have 2x2. Adding 2x4 for the other slots will give you 12gb. See thread above for comments about 12gb as good alternative cheaper than Apple-supplied memory. You can also take out 2x2 and replace with 4x4 to reach maximum of 16gb for less than $200 more than the base machine.

Whatever is the cheapest. No reason to pay extra for a certain brand because they are all essentially the same.
