Is the memory the same in the iMac and the MacBook Pro (both from 2007)? Also, I understand that both of these machines can hold 4 GB of RAM, but only use 3GB. Is this true? Thanks from a neophyte!

depends on the model. the newer aluminum iMacs have a max of 4GB ram. the older white model maxes out at 3.3GB.
the ram is the same for all intel macbook, macbook pro, iMac, and mac minis: PC2-5300 667MHz 200 pin SODIMM.

i don't recall max macbook pro ram off the top of my head. but a quick look at apple.com will tell you.
