Memory question

Hey Folks,

Recently purchased an iMac with 8gb ram and now want to increase this, so question is;

1. Buy two 16gb and add to the two 4gb already installed for 40gb total
Or
2. Buy four 8gb and remove the two 4gb already installed for 32gb total?

Is either more efficient? Will 40gb be that much better than 32gb?

Cost vs performance is my concern here.

Which iMac do you have, how many slots does it have actually? Perhaps confirm with Apple/ Everymac (.com)
And 8gb is great, but 16gb is what I consider the new standard to be honest. Especially if you want more out of your more serious apps performance wise.

Why isn't 24gb enough for you btw, if you have 8, and add 2x8gb to the pile? The uni here has a bunch of maxed out 5k 27" iMacs with 16gb ram, and they do creative stuff, and there aren't any complaints, when I check the memory usage for fun it's around 10.

What I did was purchase (4) 8GB sticks from Macsales.com then sent back my (2) Apple 4GB sticks for $20ish credit. Cost $175 32GB roughly. Of course I always have 20GB free so not sure I really needed all that.

You could just get 2 8GB sticks for total of 24GB for around $100. Or go all the same for less then $200 total 32GB

What is your typical usage with LPX? Tracks, plugins, instruments, etc etc?

More than likely just adding 2x8gb to your existing 8gb for a total of 24gb will be MORE than enough. I'm sure there might be some exceptions there. You can always remove and upgrade the OEM RAM at a later date.
