Memory Questions

I was just gifted a new MBP by my mother who hadn't used it once since she bought it in December. Great right? Well...yeah...its great, but its only got 512 MB of ram. What I want to know is if there are any risks involved in buying memory from anyone but apple? I read the thread about that cheap ram and understand that I should probably buy memory that is guaranteed to work in my laptop, but is there any risk of frying my motherboard or causing any other permanent damage?
Also, am I running any risk of voiding my warranty or my Applecare plan?

I have used Crucial Technology RAM in all 3 of my Macs and haven't had any problems whatsoever.

I can't see why your warranty or Applecare would be void by using non Apple RAM, obviously if damage to the MBP occured during the upgrade then I doubt you would be coverered under warranty or Applecare.

If you do buy non Apple RAM and suspect a fault with the MBP and have to return it, there is nothing to say that you can't just remove the RAM module before it goes for repair.

It's the general consensus that when you buy more RAM for an Apple computer,you buy it from anywhere but Apple.

I have used RAM from datamem for my Macs and haven't had any problems. You can find them at http://www.datamemorysystems.com. They seem to have reasonable prices.

do you have applecare? if so apple memory would be covered by this too (along with an AEBS etc), for some reason this would lead me to buying ram from apple even though it is more expensive

The warranty should not be effected for changing the Ram.Anyway would advise to give a call to Apple or the distributor to reconfirm.
