How much memory RAM is adequate to operate a 2020 I Mac. I want add more Memory. How much Memory do i need.

Thanks hal

What software do you want to run on the iMac? For most causal use 8 GB is enough.

But will you be running VMware, any of the above suit or Final Cut Pro? For any non-casual use like that, I'd say 16 GB is the minimum.

It turns out that you have to double the RAM to notice a difference. So the next step up is to 32 GB and that is only needed if you are doing so serious media editing and even MacOS will use most of the RAM only for buffing files.

Most people will suggest 16 GB to be safe, but really if all you do is web browsing, emails and some Word documents 8 will work even for light ideo editing. My iMac has 24 GB and I check using Performance Monitor and rarely ever see all the memory in use.

For the 2020 iMac it is important to make sure that your memory is 100% compatible with the existing RAM. Also the additional RAM has to be the same capacity as the other RAM in the machine, otherwise the iMac will reduce the speed of the RAM. So if you have a iMac with 8GB, you should buy two 4GB chips to take the total to 16GB, which should be enough for most users.

Yes you can use RAM from different companies, best advice is to buy from a reputable company like Crucial or OWC.
