Memory Upgrade

Hello,

I want to upgrade my memory on my new Intel Based iMac. I unserstand apple had written THIS guide on installing memory, but I have a question. If I install 2 new memory units will my computer still function with all my data/files/programs still there? And also what exactly does memory do?

I've always used this analogy when explaining RAM (memory):

Think of RAM as a workbench; the larger the RAM/workbench is, the more you can do at one time. Essentially, RAM is a workbench, a digital workbench for the computer.

And to answer your other question; no, if you install more RAM, it will not harm your files. RAM is emptied each time you turn off the computer. It's temporary storage. Keep in mind, though, that with the Intel iMacs, you can only upgrade your RAM to 3GB. Most people find 1GB just fine. Hope this helped.

If you upgrade your drive to a larger drive ... that will however affect your files.

Since they will still be on the old drive that you take out.
