Menu Bar - Order of the apps

This is truly a first world annoyance
I want to keep the spotlight icon as the first icon on the left side of the icons on the menu bar
I put it there using the apple key but it doesn't stick
something else moves to that spot
Is there a way to lock it down?

I suppose that by apple key you mean you use the command key and then drag the spotlight icon to the left; it seems to be working fine with me and comes back in that position even after a restart.

There is something called "Bartender" that might be able to do this.

But I'm thinking that the spotlight and notifications icons are pretty much "fixed" and cannot easily be moved around.
