MenuBar Window Switcher

Hi there,

anyone know if there is a third-party app that allows you to see different windows for an active app in the menubar?

Instead of having to click on "Window" and clicking on an item in the window list, what you'd have is different windows shown as the apps icon, and one click would switch you to that window...

I've tried checking online but the generic terms of such a search yields thousands of results related to other things with the same keywords. "Windows" is the bummer :/

P.S. I've got uBar, but that is a dock replacement and doesn't really serve the purpose.

What about using App-Exposé?

Swipe down with 3-4 fingers on trackpad (4 on mine, but I believe that is something I have changed in trackpad settings)

I've been using Expose for a while now, but it's still a bit of a mission.

With Expose there's no way of telling whether you have additional windows open until you enter Expose.

Guess I'm looking for something that is constantly active so just a glance will tell me what I want. And since there's extra space on the Menu Bar, I'd like it to go toward some productivity.

Have you looked at Hyperdock? it shows screen images of each open window in an app... but it shows it when you hover over the app icon in the Dock, not the menu bar.

It's $10, but worth it to me.

Maybe adjust your workflow to use tabs instead of Windows, if the app you are using supports it and you don't them side by side. Apple made systemwide support of tabs in Sierra.

I looked at this first lol! This would be the absolute ideal solution. But unfortunately most apps don't even support this at the moment. As a matter of fact, the whole reason I want this is because Chrome & Firefox will often open new links in new windows, and this is such a pain in the @ss - because sometimes a popup opens and pushes itself to the background, which is very annoying.

I've found a solution for Firefox >> about:config >> browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction >> value :0

If I could force all Windows to use only Tabs I'd be on that like an Android on a virus.

But Alas...we have to wait for developers to update their apps. I think in the mean time HyperDock will provide an adequate solution.

But one of the main reasons I adopted MacOS from being a 15 year Windows user, was when I played around with Finder and discovered Cover Flow and tabbed Folders - amazing!

Hmm odd, I am primarily using chrome and never experience new windows unless I press cmd+N. (some else is broken though, as it does not work with links from other apps og notifikations. And actually it does open a new blank window [does go to the link or anything]. Not sure if it some of my installed extensions causing it. Therefore currently configured safari as default browser).

In Chrome I do have an deactivated extension installed to only allow one windows. I don't need it, but maybe it is useful for you:

One extension I do have activated and would not be without because I always run fullscreen is and that closing the last tab exit fullscreen:

I use Chrome primarily for business use only. So typically I have a set group of tabs that automatically load and don't really use other tabs there. I considered using Chrome as my default non-work browser as well but I'm still hardcore Firefox. I love Firefox for my everyday browsing needs.

But it's not just browsers, MS Office 365, OpenOffice - where I typically have dozens of spreadsheets and word docs open tends to become very hard to manage. But it's not a total train smash. The fact that Firefox's about:config and HyperDoc seems like a workable workaround I reckon.

Forgot to mention also, when downloading from your browser, if you click away from the download prompt, it sits somewhere in a background window. So if I'm downloading dozens of individual PDFs or something, I have to literally wait for each prompt, click save, and then go onto the next one.

I only recently discovered MacOS can force windows into tabs, so that was a major plus. I mean I've been using tabs all this time, but occasionally an app will open a Finder window etc etc, and it used to go to a new window - until I discovered the setting in MacOS to force new windows to tabs, so that took a lot of headache away.

I think with some time, OpenOffice and MS Office will catch on. It's only a matter of time.

I'm very weary about third-party extensions, so typically I do not believe in the "there's an extension for that" philosophy.
