I erased the bootcamp partition using disk manger so now it is just a empty partition. But I cant seem to merge it back to the old partition. Is the only way of doing this reinstalling OSX?

You might want to reinstall Bootcamp.....The correct way to reclaim the space is to use Bootcamp Assistant to free up the Windows partition space. Click on “Continue” and check the box for “Install or remove Windows 7 or later version” – be sure all other options are unchecked, then click “Continue” again – note the language may vary slightly depending on the version of Boot Camp and OS X. Finally, check Disk Utility and you'll see the free space went to your Mac partition.
