Merging Partitions with Disk Utility

I have an external hard drive that I use for my Time Machine backup of my internal drive and a second external drive. When I set up the backup drive initially I partitioned it so that in addition to time machine there is a segment of the drive available for a clone of the internal SSD. I don't think a clone is really necessary for me and would like to merge the two partitions. Is there any way to do this with disk utility that would not erase all of the time machine backups I have made or do I essentially have to reformat the drive and start from scratch?

Only if the Time Machine volume comes before the other partition (clockwise), in which case you can just delete the unused partition to perform the merger. If not, then all you can do is clone the Time Machine volume to another partition/drive, then format the disk and restore the volume onto it.
