Hi,

I was wondering if the information in both, a macbook pro and a macbook air, (having both intel chips), may be merged into a new macbook air with M chip.

The kind of merge I would be looking for, is the one offered at the start of a new computer, where one is asked if one would like to transfer all the information from another computer into the new computer. However, instead of transferring the information of only one computer, the information of two computers would be transferred into the new computer with M chip.

Is it possible? If so, how?

Thank you in advance, kind regards!

Someone else will probably offer a definitive answer. My wild guess is no if you mean you want to merge both into one user account. I could easily be wrong about this- just guessing.

I'm not sure what would happen if you perhaps renamed a user account on one of them something else. For example, if user is Joe on 1 and the other is also Joe but you made it Joe2, I wonder if Migration Assistant might be able to pull both in as 2 users on the new system. Then you can sign in as Joe for access to those files and Joe2 for access to the others.

Wait for more replies- maybe someone knows of a way.

But here's a suggestion: if you can isolate the files you want moved, pick the one with the least number of such files and manually move them onto the new Mac after you first Migrate the other one. For example, if it's a bunch of documents, just move all of the documents over. if it's a bunch of Photos, move the Photos library and then merge 2 libraries into 1. Etc.

Another option: backup one of them with something like Super Duper or CCC to an external drive and then you should have full access to all such files on that external when you need- say- Joe2 files.

Yet another: backup BOTH of them as just described to a drive or two and then use that drive or two with the new Mac and only pull in what you actually need when you need it. Stuff you don't really need migrated could keep living on that external or two... and you won't clutter up your new Mac with files you don't really need on it.
