Due to the relative age of the AppleInsider article, I'd say its pretty safe to assume that the MB/MBP expected upgrades are only chip swaps. According to the article, the laptop line is done being engineered completely....its all marketing timing at this point. I doubt there was enough time for a full redesign based around the C2D chips. Marketing will pull the trigger based on current sales, ending any current promotions, and best timing for the holiday.....thats it. The CD and C2D lines are both far too new, and CD isn't exactly being dropped in favor of C2D en masse industry-wide, to worry about any "reputation" issues for a few months. 10/10 is a good guess based on current shipping times, inventory, blah blah blah....but anytime in the next 4 weeks would be plenty plausible.

So, I predict when the C2D MB/MBPs are released, we are going to see a slew of threads of guilt-filled CD MB/MBP owners who "should have waited," even more angst-filled "Apple sucks so bad, they didn't make 4gb ram, 10k rpm drives, and the latest nVidia Quadro card standard!!!!" type posts, and plenty of people throwing down plastic while Apple rakes in the dough.

For me, I only hope my dying PowerBook G4 lives long enough to C2D MBs. If it doesn't, oh well....I'll buy a CD MB and be happy, knowing that the moderate amount of media encoding I do is the only thing I'll be missing out on with reasonably measurable performance increase over CD.

I wonder if the average Joe can just do a chip swap in the current Core Duo setup? Is the current Macbook line soldered? Not sure it would be worth the expense however. Still, I'd like to know.

I know! But I can't seem to resist viewing them all! :(

I noticed Newegg is selling the Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz processor for $249. It is a socket "M" chip. The one review online said he upgraded his Gateway laptop from the Core Duo to this.... hum....

I believe it's soldered in. Or maybe it's not, but you have to do some soldering to get the Merom chip in. I personally wouldn't try doing a chip swap!


And I didn't think C2D was some amazing thing that deserved a holiday release or anything. I guess I was wrong. We'll see how Apple markets it. ;)

I did some research and yeah, looks like it is surface mounted and cannot be swapped. :rolleyes:
But I understand the iMac and the Mini can be swapped out! That is kinda cool. I wonder if the newer generation of Macbook Pro with Merom will be socketed? Probably is not due to space savings...
Bummer...

I'd say this prediction is the more accurate than all the C2D rumors combined.

even if there isnt a re-design they would of spent some time sorting bugs in the MBP... i also think that if it was just a chip swap intel wouldnt of had much in put when we know they have had some input

If it is just a chip swap it is going to be so disappointing.

Just hate having to gut the MBP in order to install a new hard drive.

Odds are better that the issues are addressed if there is a redesign, if it is just a simple chip swap... then just bear in mind that they could have rolled whatever hardware revisions they made onto the assembly line before, but why didn't they do it then? Likewise what are the odds that they'd do it now then?

anyway, just ordered my MBP, and quiet happy with it, but couldn't stop reading this Merom threads, because my MBP will be ship onOctober 19, guess there still is a chance..:p

what about yorkfild, 45nm tech or the like?:rolleyes:

Innovate or die

My feeling is that Steve Jobs motto is "innovate or die" - he probably hates to do just simple brainless updates like a chip swap. It has to be something clever to be worth an update. E.g. when they upgraded the powerbook's clock speed incrementally, they introduced at the same time new Apple-like features like the two-finger trackpad scrolling feature or the sudden motion sensor. I like this- it makes Apple different from other companies. They never simply do the obvious.

It's the same with the iPod IMO. Competing designs simply try to put everything you can think of in one device, Radio+Video+WiFi+Bluetooth+GPS+etc along the simple reasoning "more is better". But simply adding stuff together is not the same thing as innovating. IMO Jobs/Apple has a close-to-perfect feeling for what makes a nice package and what doesn't.

there are GOOD special, and there are BAD special, and being outdated is a BAD special...
