I downloaded iOS 12.4.8 on my iPad last night. This morning I have a red exclamation on my message icon. There have been no messages sent that didn’t go through. No messages sent to anyone who doesn’t have an Apple product. How do I get rid of this symbol? Thanks.

It could simply just be a bug with iOS 12.4.8. Maybe Apple will release iOS 12.4.9 at some point in the future to fix that.

Sign out and in iCloud. Also make sure under Settings > Messages > that your phone number is listed first for receive and send from. Your email address may be listed first.
Well, it didn’t work. I signed out and back in iCloud. My phone number is first, then my email address. The red exclamation symbol is still there.

What i have mentioned thus far has worked for me and others in the past. Is iMessage toggled on under Settings? Does it say can’t activate or sign in etc.? In searching the forum, this problem surfaced for some users back in 2017, and there wasn’t a definitive one size fits all fix, unfortunately.

In addition to what BasicGreatGuy has asked, it might be helpful to post a pic of exactly where you're seeing the red exclamation point. Do you have Apple Pay Cash enabled but the set up is incomplete?

Yes, iMessage is toggled on. There are no messages indicating a problem. Just the red exclamation symbol on my iPad home screen. See attached.

I don’t have Apple Pay Cash on this device. I do have it on my iPhone, and it is set up completely. In fact, I just used it last week.

Thanks but I think I’d rather wait and let Apple fix the problem in their next update.
If it is a glitch due from the update process or a random OS bug, your problem may still be there after another update.

Unless the next OS update specifically addresses the possible random OS bug you have shown, you won’t see any change with the next update.

If the problem is due to a update process glitch, the problem may continue after the next update.

If I were having this same problem, I would continue trying the trouble-shooting process so that I could (hopefully) resolve the problem.

Good luck with waiting on Apple. I hope the wait pays off in some way.

Thank you. I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful for your help. I appreciate your taking the time to assist me. Just frustrated with Apple products in general. Have a great day.

Red exclamation sign on MSG icon is basically for something which is not completed like undelivered Text or Phone no is not registered under Imessages. If there is no undelivered sms then you can register phone no under Imessage. To resolve it, You need to goto Settings > Messages > Imessage > Send & Receive , Now your phone no will be reflecting there. Simply click on that . after few seconds it will be register to send & receive Imessages and red exclamation sign will be disappeared.
