Message indicator?

Does anyone know if there will be some sort of indicator or icon to let you know if you have voice or SMS messages waiting? I realize that a little number appears over the application icon with new messages, but I'm wondering about something you can look at quickly to let you know if you've got anything waiting for you.

I'm imagining a little icon on the menu bar (where battery status is) would be a good place for that since you can see it while the phone is locked, but so far I can't tell if that is a feature that's in there.

I was wondering the same thing although I was hoping for an LED that can be seen without turning the screen on.

My treo has a tiny little LED that flashes green when I have a new message and it's really handy. I can see it when I'm across the room and wouldn't think to check for new messages.
