You can disable lock screen notifications for messages, but that completely disables them on the lock screen. I'm not sure you can set them to not have previews in one place but have them in another.

Settings > Notifications > Messages > Toggle off "Show on Lock Screen" should do exactly what you want.

Your phone won't light up and show a text while locked. You will only see the banner (if you have it set to banner) if your phone is unlocked and in use.

Is there a way to have message previews in banners only? I don't like seeing them on the lock screen.

To go a little further with @lagwagons post, if you still want to show a text notification on the lock screen without seeing the message, leave "Show on lock screen" enabled. This will still notify you of a text while your screen is locked, but won't show the actual message.

I actually understood the OP's question differently. Are they asking whether they can suppress the preview of messages on the lock screen or are they asking to disable the sms/iMessage notifications on the lock screen? The latter has been explained above. The former: disable "Show Previews" at the bottom of Settings > Notifications > Messages.

The way I read it is actually more of the former but with an additional requirement that while preview is disabled for lockscreen notifications it is still enabled for banner notifications--basically no preview when the device is locked and preview when the device is unlocked.

I want to see that I have a text message on the lock screen, but not show a message preview.

I want to have a preview on the banners only.

Thanks for the replies.

That's what the Show Previews setting is for. Just turn it off.

Show Preview kills all previews. Your only option is to just kill Show on Lock Screen. You could still pull down Notification Centre from the lock screen to see your messages from there all while not having them display directly on the lock screen.

Thanks, I think I would rather just have no previews. I like having lock screen notifications.

Ah my bad, I mixed up OS X with iOS. I actually thought iOS would do this too, because it just makes sense. But you can still read the messages in Notification Center or pull down the banner when it appears.
