Messages always running in background?

I just want to know whether the messages is always running in the background? i mean do i need to open the messages app every time i login to my mac in order to receive imessage or is it automatically running in the background like "FaceTime"

Background. I think all these messaging services like FaceTime and iMessages come through a process that handles all Push services. That service gets a message and it'll pass through to the relevant app.

aosnotifyd is the process (I highly suspect) that handles push notifications.

Thanks for the info guys.. i just tested out and i can confirm that you don't need to run the "Messages" in order to receive iMessage or FaceTime call... If someone send you a message you will get it automatically... it's pretty cool.
