I am running OS X El Capitan (recently it seemed to come out of beta, although I've been having this problem throughout the beta so it shouldn't matter).

Split screen works completely fine in all regards except one. If I put messages in a split screen with another app it hogs the screen.

If you look at the "mail and messages" screen, you can see that only messages appears (and if I go to that space it is as if I only have messages maximized).

If I open mail manually, it jumps to the space and looks like this:

The divider is gone, and if I click on messages it again hogs the whole screen.

To reiterate, this only happens with the messages app.

Perhaps mail is not suitable for running split screen, while Apple doesn't disable this.

Mail works fine in split screen, messages does not. And it seems very doubtful that apple would allow such an obvious bug in a major release. Mostly I'm curious if anyone else can replicate this behavior, and if not, what might be different about my setup.

I have that issue on my MacBook. What device do you have?

What about creating a new account and seeing if they share the same view happily there? That should let you know if it's a system or user issues.
Thanks for the tip!

I logged in as a guest user and the split view was working normally. I then logged back into my regular account and it was fixed!

I have that issue on my MacBook. What device do you have?
Im also using a macbook

I have the same problem , I create split screen view by holding the green button , then click messages app and I can create the split screen view , however as soon as I click on the messages side of the split screen , the messages app hogs the whole screen
