I downloaded Messages Beta about an hour ago, and I'm just now able to access Word and other programs that froze and behaved strangely after doing so. I was worried I'd lost a lot of material. Could not even force quit for some time; windows were cycling in and out -- including documents and programs I hadn't had open upon mandatory restart.

Anyone else experienced this?

Help!

Yes! This is happening to me as well! Messages, Mail, Pages, all don't work! Crashed like 20 times!

Apple Mac Apps crash after Messages Beta

Same thing here, on my iMac! I'm now downloading the uninstall package (it includes iChat); you can dowload it by opening Messages Beta, clicking "Messages Beta" and choosing the second option. I'll now restart the Mac to complete the re-installation of iChat. Let's see if it works

[edit] Back to iChat, everything seems to work again now... Perhaps Messages Beta should be considered an alpha version, at least at this time.

Then the obvious thing to do is go back to your backup that you made before installing the Messages Beta.

Seriously, it is a beta, and you take your chances when you install a beta.
