Messages does not work well in split view

If you have Messages in a narrow 'window' in split view, it does not show the conversations pane. It seems that then there is no way to switch between conversations. On iPhone there is a '< messages' button. Something like that is missing from OSX.

Is this an Apple oversight, or did anyone find a solution?

If you mouse over the edge of the narrow messages window in split view, the conversations will toggle.

Thank you so much! Great. Very tricky, you have to hold the mouse right before the edge, but not on the edge, but now I know it, it works well. I have been looking for an answer on Apple's forum, but never got a solution.
