Messages hates my mac and refuses to work

I have tried even deleting and re-adding my account to no avail. MEssages will not connect with my Apple ID, period. The other accounts (AIM, GTalk, etc.) work fine.

It seems to be a mac + Messages isolated issue and not related to my Apple ID (as both my iPhone and iPad are working fine with it) or the iCloud as a whole since all the other services (Calendar, Notes, etc.) are working/syncing just fine.

This is what I get when I try to make it go "active"/login:

hey there, this happened to me awhile back and caused me about an hour of frustration.

if you haven't fixed it yet, I recommend doing a Finder > Go > Go to Folder > /private/etc/hosts and seeing what you have in there. If you have any clauses blocking verisign servers remove that and save, and restart messages. That fixed it for me.
