I just posted about this as well. I am also missing the contact icon in my app layout. I tried a restart, a hard reset on both devices, as well as a reset sync data. Nothing. It's driving me crazy.

It’s so annoying, it is like the contacts aren’t syncing to watch.

I unpaired, then repaired my watch and the contacts are showing up now. There isn't a contacts icon in the app layout anymoe though, but everything is showing up ok.

Another fix (for me at least) is to edit the contacts telephone number to international standard, ie +44 1234 123456

This happens on older watchOS versions too. Quick fix is to open the Watch app on your iPhone -> General ->Reset -> Reset Sync Data. It will look like nothing happened, but wait a few minutes and check your messages app on your watch again..it is fixed.

This option erases then re-syncs contact and calendar info from your iPhone. Nothing else is affected.

I have this same problem. When I go to the watch app General->Reset all of the options under Reset are orange & tapping them does nothing. I can't even do an Erase or anything. I guess I'll have to do the unpair/pair option.

I take that back - it did something because my contacts show up now in my Phone & Messages apps on the watch. Thanks!

I had this problem on one of the watchOS betas, and none of the above fixed it. I waited until the next beta came out a week or 10 days later and the bug had been fixed. I imagine we will see watchOS 5.01 or something relatively soon.

Thanks that fixed the issue :) Additionally I deleted the messages by swiping left in the Messages list view.
